Question 7:

Categorise the following plants into hydrophytes, halophytes, mesophytes and xerophytes. Give reasons for your answers.
a. Salvinia
b. Opuntia
c. Rhizophora
d. Mangifera

Answer:

  1. Salvinia are the floating fern which are small, branched and contains hair on leaf. They are hydrophytes that grows in water or submerged in water.
  2. Opuntia is genus of the flowering plants that belongs to the cactus family. They are xerophytic plants which grows in the dry habitat like in desserts. These plant’s leaf are modified into the spines to reduce the transpiration rate.
  3. Rhizophora species are the genus of mangrove trees which are the salt excluders (which have the capacity to avoid salt uptake). They are halophytes (salt- tolerant plants) which grows in high saline concentration but these plants avoid its effects.
  4. Mangifera is commonly known as Mango and they are mesophytes which needs average amount of water for the growth. It means they are not particularly adapted to dry or wet environment but contains moderate environmental growth condition.
