Welcome to the NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Chemistry - Chapter Coordination Compounds. This page offers a step-by-step solution to the specific question from Exercise 2, Question 32:
What will be the correct order for the wavelengths of absorption in the visible region for the following:
[Ni(NO2)6]4-, [Ni(NH3)6]2+, [Ni(H2O)6]2+
. With detailed answers and explanations for each chapter, students can strengthen their understanding and prepare confidently for exams. Ideal for CBSE and other board students, this resource will simplify your study experience. What will be the correct order for the wavelengths of absorption in the visible region for the following:
[Ni(NO2)6]4-, [Ni(NH3)6]2+, [Ni(H2O)6]2+
The central metal ion in all the three complexes is the same. Therefore, absorption in the visible region depends on the ligands. The order in which the CFSE values of the ligands increases in the spectrochemical series is as follows:
H2O < NH3 < NO2 -
Thus, the amount of crystal-field splitting observed will be in the following order:

Hence, the wavelengths of absorption in the visible region will be in the order:
[Ni(H2O)6]2+ > [Ni(NH3)6]2+ > [Ni(NO2)6]4-
The reaction between A and B is first order with respect to A and zero order with respect to B. Fill in the blanks in the following table:
| Experiment |
A/ mol L - 1 |
B/ mol L - 1 |
Initial rate/mol L - 1 min - 1 |
| I | 0.1 | 0.1 |
2.0 × 10 - 2 |
| II | -- | 0.2 |

| III | 0.4 | 0.4 | -- |
| IV | -- | 0.2 |
