Class 12 Chemistry - Chapter The Solid State NCERT Solutions | A compound forms hexagonal close-packed

Welcome to the NCERT Solutions for Class 12th Chemistry - Chapter The Solid State. This page offers a step-by-step solution to the specific question from Exercise 1, Question 15: a compound forms hexagonal close packed structure....
Question 15

A compound forms hexagonal close-packed structure. What is the total number of voids in 0.5 mol of it? How many of these are tetrahedral voids?

Answer

Number of close-packed particles = 0.5 x 6.022 x 1023 = 3.011 x 1023

Therefore, number of octahedral voids = 3.011 x 1023

And, number of tetrahedral voids = 2 x 3.011 x 1023 = 6.022 x 1023

Therefore, total number of voids = 3.011 x 1023 + 6.022 x 1023 = 9.033 x 1023
