Mutualism is the symbiotic relationship between the two different species that gets benefits from each other. And, lichens shows the mutualistic association of algae and fungi.
Algae and fungi both are dependent on each other for their survival in symbiotic relationship. This is how, algal part synthesizes food for fungi and fungi takes up water and minerals for algae. Thus, in case if we separate them, both of them will die.
