Answer the following questions briefly.

(a) What are the three components of a map?
(b) What are the four cardinal directions?
(c) What do you mean by the term ‘the scale of the map’?
(d) How are maps more helpful than a globe?
(e) Distinguish between a map and a plan.
(f) Which map provides detailed information?
(g) How do symbols help in reading maps?

Answer

(a) The three components of the maps are:

  1. Symbol
  2. Direction
  3. Distance

(b) The four cardinal directions are: North, South, East and West.

(c) Scale is the ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance shown on the map.

(d) Maps are more helpful than a globe in the following ways:

  1. Maps contains many facts.
  2. Maps are easy to carry than globe.
  3. Maps provide more information than a globe.
  4. We can study even a part of the Earth on the map.

(e) Maps: A map is a representation or a drawing of the Earth’s surface or a part of it drawn on a flat surface according to a scale.

Plan: It is a drawing of a small area on a large scale.

(f) Large scale maps give more information than small scale maps, as they cover more space on the map to show features. And, they are easy to study or know than the small scale ones. 

(g) Different signs we use to detect a place on a map are called symbols.

  1. Maps are shown by using certain letters, shapes, colours, pictures and lines.
  2. They gives us lot of information in a limited space and are simple to read.
