Class 10 Science - Chapter Periodic Classification of Element NCERT Solutions | Nitrogen (atomic number 7) and phosphoru

Welcome to the NCERT Solutions for Class 10th Science - Chapter Periodic Classification of Element. This page offers a step-by-step solution to the specific question from Excercise 4 , Question 7: nitrogen atomic number 7 and phosphorus atomic....
Question 7

Nitrogen (atomic number 7) and phosphorus (atomic number 15) belong to group 15 of the Periodic Table. Write the electronic configuration of these two elements. Which of these will be more electronegative? Why?

Answer
 Element  K L M

 Nitrogen

 Phosphorus

 2 5

 2 8 5

Nitrogen is more electronegative than phosphorus. As we move down a group, the number of shells increases. Therefore, the valence electrons move away from the nucleus and the effective nuclear charge decreases. Resulting in a decrease in the tendency to attract electrons and hence electronegativity decreases.
