Question 17:

On the earth, a stone is thrown from a height in a direction parallel to the earth’s surface while another stone is simultaneously dropped from the same height. Which stone would reach the ground first and why?

Answer:

The one which was simply dropped down will reach the ground first. If the height was large enough and measurements very accurate the earth continues to spin. Therefore, this stone will fall directly in a straight line joining the initial point on the centre of the earth but the point on the earth’s surface which was directly below the initial point will have moved. The vertical component of velocity of the other stone, which had been hurled parallel to the earth’s surface, is zero.

However, owing to the sphericity of the earth’s surface together with earth’s spin, it will have to fall greater distance in order to reach earth’s surface. Therefore, it will take longer.
