A nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to another through a gap known as synapse. Membrane of presynaptic neuron and postsynaptic neuron forms synapse which may or may not be separated by a gap called synaptic cleft. At chemical synapse, the membrane of the pre and post synaptic neurons separated by a fluid filled space known as synaptic cleft. There are some vesicles filled with chemicals transmitters in the axon terminal. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters that involve in transmission of impulses at these synapses. Once the neurotransmitters are released in the synapse, they are taken up by specialised channels that are present on the membrane of post- synaptic neuron. This process completes when neurotransmitters enters into post synaptic neuron.
