Class 12th Chemistry 2017 Set2 Outside Delhi Board Paper Solution

Question 26

Following are the transition metal ions of 3d series:

Ti4+ , V2+ , Mn3+ , Cr3+

(Atomic numbers : Ti = 22 ,  V = 23,  Mn = 25, Cr = 24)

Answer the following:

1 Which ion is most stable in an aqueous solution and why?

2. Which ion is a strong oxidising agent and why?

3. Which ion is colourless and why?

Answer

1. Ti4+ = 3d° ,   V2+ = 3d3 ,   Mn3+  = 3d4 ,   Cr3+  = 3d3

out of these ions Cr3+ is most stable due to cystal feild spliting concept. In Cr3+ , t2g in half filled, so extra stable.

2.  Mn3+ is strong oxidising agent because  Mn3+  can easily be converted into  Mn2+ having d5 configuration which is stable half-filled configuration.

.3. Ti4+ is colourless  because it is having no unpaired e- for excitation to higher energy level and it is colourless.
