Ficus bengalensis, an Indian fig tree, whose branches root themselves like new trees over a large area. More trunks and branches grow from the roots. Because of this trait and its longevity, this tree is considered immortal and is a part of Indian myths and legends. Even today, the banyan tree serves as the focal point of village life, and the village council meets in its shade.
