International Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated around the globe to celebrate mothers and to honor them for what they do for their children, the sacrifices they make for their children, the unconditional love that they give to them, and most importantly for bringing those children into this world which nobody can ever do but only a mother.

We try to thank our mothers on this day for bringing us into this world and also helping us grow in all those beautiful ways they do, for always staying by our sides and supporting us in every situation whatsoever.

Date of Celebration

International Mother’s Day is an important occasion that falls on the second Sunday of May, every year. And because of this ritual, it doesn’t have a fixed date, if we talk about the celebration of this year, it was celebrated on the 9 May.

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908 by Anna Jarvis who made a memorial for her mother in West Virginia which now has the International Mother’s Day Shrine. So Mother’s Day is celebrated as an important across the world to express respect, honor, and love towards mother.

A Mother is someone who needs to be celebrated every day because of what she does, she takes care of every small requirement of everyone, she never says that she is tired of doing things for her children. Usually, the things that we ignore for not being so important, a mother is someone who takes care of those non-important things to thinking that they can be important for her children.

A mother does not get any reward, any trophy, any acknowledgment for her many sacrifices, a tireless contribution for the family makes it important that we at least dedicate one particular day for all the mothers and make them feel special, loved and tell all of them that how special they are and how much do we respect them for what they always do.

Mother’s day comes as a reminder to think about mothers and mother-like figures in our life, who inspire us every day for becoming better people and better versions of ourselves.

Traditions followed by people in honor of Mothers

Talking about the early history of Mother’s day can be quite arguable because so many different countries have their different history of this day. Just like the early history of the ancient Greeks, they used to held festivities in honor of Rhea, the mother of the gods.

Christianity also has some early history of mother’s day, Early Christians celebrated the fourth Sunday in Lent as a Mother’s festival in honor of Mother Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

Another history comes From UK, the tradition of Mother’s Day is very similar to its American counterparts nowadays but its origins are different, as the day commemorates returning to your mother’s church on the fourth Sunday in lent.

However, this tradition did not work for everyone after some time as some English colonists who settled in America for their reasons have discontinued this tradition of Mothering Sunday the reason may be that it would have been a bit of a trip to return to their mother church for the day.

Mother’s Day in India

The second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother’s Day in India. This year it was celebrated on Sunday, May 9. On this day we thank our mothers for making us who we are, express our love and gratitude for them although this day is celebrated on different days in different places such as in the UK it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of March, in Greece, it is celebrated on February 2, etc.

Countries can be different, dates of celebration can be different but the thing which is the same everywhere are those feelings and emotions that we have for our mothers. That emotional bond can not be different in any country or any tradition.

How to celebrate Mother’s Day?

Different people have different ways of celebrating Mother’s day and have different ways of telling their mom that how special she is for them. What usually people do is that they pamper their mothers by treating them the same way their mothers treat them, for example;

  • Giving breakfast in bed
  • Offering flowers to her
  • Giving her a day off
  • Throwing a surprise party
  • Spending a whole day with her, and doing whatever she says
  • Pamper her; relaxing massage, pedicure, manicure, refreshing facial, are the best way to pamper her.

Other than all of the above things it depends on the bond that you share with your mother, which will make it easy for you to understand the way you can celebrate this day for your mother more effectively and in a way that conveys your loud and clear message to you mother of your love and respect for her.

How did Mother’s Day Celebration Start?

A true American Mother’s Day was first suggested in the United States by Julia Ward Howe who is the writer of “the Battle Hymn of the Republic”. She suggested that the day should be dedicated to peace, she started organizing Mother’s Day meetings in Boston every year since 1872.

However, some people would argue that Mother’s day on the current date was almost accidentally set in motion by Mrs. Juliet Calhoun Blakely. On Sunday 11 May 1877, Mrs. Blakely’s birthday, her son who was the pastor of her Church, left the pulpit abruptly which made Mrs. Blakely step to the pulpit and take over the rest of the service, she also called for other mothers to join her in the service.

After watching the mother’s actions, the two sons of Mrs. Blakely’s were so moved that they decided and promised to return to their hometown every year to mark their mother’s birthday. The brothers then also urged fellow people to honor their mothers on the second Sunday of May month.

In 1907, Miss Anna began a movement to set up a national Mother’s Day in honor of her mother. Anna’s mother, Mrs. Anna M. Jarvis, developed “Mothers Friendship Day” which was a kind of healing process after the Civil War. Miss Jarvis started celebrating this day to honor all mothers, living and dead.

Best gift for Mother’s Day

People often ask that what present should we give to our mother so that she becomes happy just by seeing it, should we gift some jewelry to her, can diamonds make our mother happy, etc. No, our mothers do not need our money or luxury to be happy and in order to feel special. All they need is your little time, spend some time with your mother every day, talk to her about things, tell her about your day, and doing this will automatically make her happy. Providing luxury, giving expensive gifts can be add on to your efforts but they can not be your whole effort for keeping your mom happy.

The best gift to give to your mother is giving her respect, treating her right, respecting her decisions as she knows what is good for us more than we know for ourselves, never disrespect her, and makes her feel like she is the most important person in your life and what value she has in your life. Because a mother is not someone who would want some materialistic gifts for herself as she has the guts to sacrifice even her requirements for her children, what would she be wanting as a gift?

Best message on Mother’s Day

Goldie Hawn said, “The truth is that how old we are as long as our mothers are alive, we want our mothers. And it’s a very powerful relationship if it is healthy”.

The best message for Mother’s Day can be to make your bond strong with your mother because she is the person who loves you unconditionally as she sees you as her part and always tries to treat you and provide you the best for you. She is somebody who never thinks about herself even once before giving anything of hers to her children. She will always give the best of advice for everything and you can rally on her every time you need her. She will always be one hand for your support that you will not have to look for because that hand will always be there whether you want it or do not want it. Do respect this blessing God has given you in your life as her blessings are direct to be heard by god. Always be grateful towards her for bringing you into this beautiful world and you got a chance to know a beautiful person in your life which is your mother.
