Fashion designing is a demanding profession. Long working hours at college and later, for a fashion show is a common feature. Typically, for every 15 minutes you spend in a fashion show, you would have spent hours, days, or weeks in an office sewing and handling administrative work, meeting with manufacturers or distributors to select materials and doing production checks, handling clients and media.
Basic Qualification
Admission to an undergraduate program in fashion designing is through an entrance exam. The basic qualification to sit for an entrance exam is 10+2 with a minimum of 50% from any recognized board of education. The duration of a postgraduate program is generally two years and requires a bachelor�s degree in a stipulated field. It helps to create a portfolio of sketches, drawings and other artistic creations for an interview.
Attitude Aptitude & Skills
To be a successful designer you need to have originality, creativity, an eye for detail and visual imagination. A fashion designer must be able to accurately combine color shades with different textures and materials to express a thought process in their creation. They should have an overall knowledge about fabrics and their draping qualities, material, weaving styles, color and design, and must also be adept at basic tailoring skills. Good communication skills, fashion consciousness, market awareness along with awareness about consumer�s preferences are important requisites.
Finances
Courses in fashion require a financial commitment from your end.Education loan is an option if you secure admission in a reputed college or else you need to opt for a personal loan at a higher rate of interest to finance your education.
Future Prospects
Fashion designing is not restricted to designing clothes alone. You can opt for Jewelry or accessory designing. A designer can start by serving as an apprentice to an established fashion designer or a fashion house or seek employment in an export or manufacturing unit. You can also freelance from home by setting up an independent boutique. There are various career options, such as fashion marketing or merchandising, fashion design production, as a costume designer, personal stylist, technical designer, production pattern maker, cutting assistant, fashion coordinator, apparel production manager, fabric buyer, fabric quality control manager or sales representative. You can also be a part of the fashion media and promotion or if writing is your forte you can get into fashion journalism. Fashion photography has also caught an eye for many.
