India is the progenitor of Ayurvedic medicine and is as popular and essential as it was then. It is a branch of medicine that is known for its long-lasting treatment procedure with no side effects, and a purely natural way of curing ailments. It is called an alternative therapy unfortunately because of the advent of allopathic medicine, but the constant efforts of the Ayurveda colleges in India, by training students and conducting research, soon it will overcome the harmful dominance of Allopathy.
To practice as an Ayurvedic doctor, you need a minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s in Ayurvedic Medicine (BAMS). To apply for the BAMS course, a student should have a pass in class XII examination in science background, with physics, chemistry and biology combination. Also, you should possess a working knowledge of Sanskrit. Admission to the Ayurvedic colleges in India is on the basis of an all-India entrance examination. However, some institutes base admission on merit, that is, marks obtained in plus two. The bachelor’s is a five-and-a-half-year degree program. Those who have a BAMS degree can pursue a PG in Ayurvedic medicine. The course lasts for 3 years, granting the degree of MD(Ayu) and MS (Ayu). Those who have an MBBS degree with a one-year internship can also apply for post-graduation in Ayurveda. The PG course is classified into 16 branches, which leads to a PhD in Ayurvedic Medicine. Some institutes also offer a 1 or 2-year certificate course.
