The Annual Status of Rural Education was released on 28th January,2025 which revealed important facts about the quality of education, learning levels and digital access in rural India. The Annual Status of Education report (ASER) 2024 was released by the Pratham Education Foundation.  Every year this foundation evaluates the status of school education in India every year.

Highlights of ASER 2024 report about status of rural education in India

 Following are the key updates in annual report of ASER 2024

Improvement in basic education skills

  • According to the report, students have gradually improved in reading and mathematical skills, although many challenges still remain.
  • Only 43% of class 3 students can read class 1 books correctly.

Increasing smartphone access

  • More than 75% of families in rural areas have smartphones available, giving students the benefit of digital learning.
  • There has been an increase in the availability of digital learning resources after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Increased enrollment rate in schools

  • The school enrollment rate among children in the age group of 6-14 years was more than 96%, which is a positive sign.
  • The education of girls has also improved and now they are moving towards higher education.

Changes in the teaching-learning process

  • In many states, teacher training and curriculum have been improved in line with the New Education Policy (NEP 2020).
  • Innovative teaching techniques are being adopted to improve the learning level of children.

Steps required to improve status of rural education

According to ASER Report 2024 steps by which improvement in education can be achieved are like promoting digital learning and teacher training. 

Promoting digital learning: 

It is necessary to make the availability of internet and smart devices more accessible in rural India.

Teacher training: 

Training of teachers is important to adopt new teaching methods and teach children more effectively.

Better implementation of government schemes: 

Effective implementation of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, RTE (Right to Education) and scholarship schemes run by the government is necessary.

According to the ASER 2024 report, the status of education in rural India is improving, but challenges still remain the same. The increased access to smartphones and digital learning platforms is a positive sign. More efforts are required to improve the basic education level. To improve the quality of education, both the government and society have to work together.
