Co-Education : How Good Is It?

Many times parents instinctively choose a co-educational institute for their kids, and at other times only the popularity and quality of education is the deciding factor. Most often the one factor that is ignored is the careful analysis of both kinds of institute – co-ed and single gender institute.

Pros of Co-education

When children grow up together, the feeling of being strangers does not exist. Also they know how to communicate which comes naturally unlike in those individuals who have grown up aloof of the other part of humanity. They are more accustomed to each others company, more accepting, and less domineering. For equality to be able to thrive and reduce gender bias and conflict, such education is essential.

Children become more adjusting and the gender egos are quashed.

They learn to compete in a healthy environment and work together in a team. They have minimal clashes due to out-performance by the other.

Students grow up into responsible and mature individuals. They are able to thus study further in college or university better with their counterparts, and also can work freely and more effectively when they get a job. Otherwise those not from such background have problem adjusting in high school, college and at the workplace where they find themselves stifled, in constant uneasiness, and frustrated.

The fear of failure is less thus.

Cons of Co-education

One major reason why parents are dissuaded from selecting a co-ed school is the lack of discipline. Girls educated in Convents are more lady-like. The rowdy company of boys typically has an effect on the mannerisms of girls. On the other hand, boys are also penalized severely and their natural mischievous instincts curbed if they are in the company of girls. The imbalance in discipline is thus a critical issue and we have not been able to find an apt and appropriate solution to it.

At the juncture of attaining puberty, the situation gets quite complex. Both get conscious of changes within them. Thus effective education suffers because of the mental and physical changes. Girls find it more difficult.

Certain subjects can be better taught in single educational institutes. Though it is healthy to teach together so that the discomfort can be minimized, but in most cases this becomes essential.

Problems like those of diminishing self-esteem and disillusionment due to such restricted environment.
